About the work

I often initiate my process with a ground of subtly variegated paper building layer upon layer of intricately cut contoured fragments. Image fragments found sifting through all kinds of outmoded textbooks, encyclopedias, leather-fillers on the natural sciences, medical instruction, industrial manuals and the like. Selections are made with a practiced eye — finding inspiration in idiosyncratic marks with semblance to the drawn line: notations, filaments, dots, dashes. My interest in acquiring old, discarded volumes began long before discovering their wondrous potential attracted by their visual eccentricities, by the warmth of the patina, and the fragility of this arcane printed matter, its evocative obsolescence. These qualities resonate another age — an authenticity — that I desire to preserve and channel.
